Title: Ikarian Goddess
Medium: Acrylic
Support: Canvas 36x36
As a child and as an adult I spent time in Greece on the island of Ikaria, it is where my Mother grew up. It is a magical island full of life, sun and history. The Myth of Daedalus and Icarus as we all know did not end well. According to the story, Daedalus, a mythical inventor, created wings made of feathers and wax to escape from the island where he and his son, Icarus, were held captive by King Minos. Icarus, however, ignored his father's warnings and flew too close to the sun. His wings melted and he fell into the sea where he met his end.
I call this painting "Ikarian Goddess" because the women of Ikaria are strong, resilient and as it is stated in the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", the man may be the head of the family but the woman is the neck.
If you were to look at the island of Ikaria from an arial view you will see that is in the shape of a bird's wing. I find that fascinating!
